The Issue

As a mother of four, with children ranging from the ages of 15 to 1 year, parenting is an immense and rewarding challenge. Each of my children have their own set of needs and circumstances. One of my children is home-schooled, with her own disabilities while the others attend traditional schooling. Like any parent, I cherish the moments I can spend with them, creating lifelong memories.

My situation is further complicated by my battle with multiple sclerosis, a chronic illness that doesn't allow me to be fit and healthy every day. There are weeks and months where I am not well enough to plan in advance, and our family trips often have to be decided last minute, based on my health. These vacations are essential; they are more than just holidays—they are opportunities to bond and create lasting memories with my children while I still can.

The fines imposed for taking children out of school during term time for family holidays place an unfair burden on families like mine. For those living with disabilities, planning vacations around the school calendar is not always feasible. Affording vacations is already challenging, and having to pay fines further adds to the financial strain.

Data from various school districts show that the academic impact of short, occasional absences is minimal, especially when families are dedicated to catching up with missed schoolwork. In fact, experiences gained during travels can be educational and enriching for children, providing learning beyond the classroom.

We need to allow families, especially those with unique challenges, the flexibility to plan vacations according to their circumstances without the added stress of financial penalties. Let us urge educational authorities to consider revising the policy on fines for term-time holidays, offering a fair resolution that accommodates families with special needs.

Please sign this petition to stop fines for parents who take their children out of school for family vacations during term-time, and help us advocate for a change that considers the diverse needs and situations of all families.
