Stop Falsehoods in Political Advertising and Shorten Campaign Durations

Stop Falsehoods in Political Advertising and Shorten Campaign Durations
The Issue
For me, the spreading of false information in politics impacts the heart of our democracy. As someone who strongly believes in the foundational principles of trust and clarity, witnessing the prevalence and acceptance of lies in political advertisements is deeply troubling. There is a mounting instability in our political landscape, as deception continues to cloud the truth and sow seeds of doubt among the population.
A study by the Royal Statistical Society reported that, alarmingly, only 21% of people trust statistics provided by politicians in campaign debates (2019). This mistrust is soaring drastically, due largely to the spread of misinformation within the realm of political advertising. Additionally, extended campaign time frames only intensify these negative effects, providing more platforms and opportunities for the sharing of false narratives.
To restore the public's faith in politics and to ensure a future based on truth and accountability, we need to put an end to these shady practices. Let's call on our legislators to enact stricter oversight on political advertising, compelling truthfulness and enforcing penalties for violators. Additionally, we should encourage changes to limit the length of campaign cycles, which may curb the sustained spread of untruthful ads and reduce overall political fatigue.
This is our call for honesty, brevity, and integrity within our political procedures. Sign this petition if you believe in the importance of truthfulness in politics and in responsible, concise campaigns.
