My Mother’s name was Elsie. She was very clever and didn’t realise until her late 30’s that she had auditory dyslexia. She was a department store manager, and was very talented at dressmaking, singing, and dancing the jive and Lindy-hop. She helped everyone, work colleagues, neighbours, friends, and relatives, even taking some people in to live with us on occasions. At times our home was like a counselling centre. She usually worked full-time, was a great home maker, and even found time to visit her own Mother on her day off, helping her with the housework. She hated injustice, and couldn’t stand lies. If someone asked her opinion about something she’d be very honest, but tactful. She was always very honest about everything, even if it meant being disliked. She loved children and animals. When she was in her late teens she was scouted by a model agency but declined as she was very shy in her earlier years. She had a great sense of humour and just got on with things, despite many hardships in her early life. She wasn’t just a Mother. She could be a great friend; someone you could really trust and rely on, someone you could confide in without fear of judgement or gossip. She liked fashion, especially hats and shoes. Even in her late 80’s she used to get me to take her to Carnaby Street and suchlike. She loved life, people, and was interested in other cultures. Once I asked her what she would have liked to have been if she hadn’t married and had children. She said I’d liked to have studied opera, or looked after children in an orphanage, or maybe become a nun, to travel and look after the poor and the sick… That was my Mother, the one the registrar decided should be starved and dehydrated to death, and the one none of our “authorities” consider it’s worth giving their time of day to about the injustice and neglect she suffered in the last two years of her life, and at her death.
