Stop Fairfax County’s Trash Take-Over

Stop Fairfax County’s Trash Take-Over
The Issue
Hello neighbors, I’m Phillip LeMaster, owner of Garby Disposal Services (a local recycling and trash collection service based in Centreville, Virginia). My wife and I built this business from scratch, sacrificing savings, sleep, and family time to serve our neighbors in Centreville and nearby communities.
But our story is just one of many. Supervisor James Walkinshaw is now pushing a county plan—Unified Sanitary Districts—that would displace every private and municipal hauler, wiping out family businesses, their drivers, and office staff, and likely outsourcing the work to a few billion-dollar corporations. This move pads county revenue and burnishes his résumé for a future run for Congress.
If this passes you will have...
Higher bills, no choice – The county will likely outsource to the two largest national firms (American & Republic). Less competition = higher prices.
Reduced service – NO MORE TWICE WEEKLY TRASH COLLECTION SERVICE.
Local jobs wiped out – Family-run crews, mechanics, and office staff disappear overnight.
Community ties lost – We know our customers by name and take care of them at all hours 7 days per week; a distant contractor will not. Think about how the DMV treats you... is that what you want in your trash hauler?
This change could bankrupt our family business and many others like it. We explicitly oppose the creation of the Unified Sanitary Districts model.
How you can help—two quick actions:
- Sign this petition to show the Board of Supervisors you oppose the takeover.
- Register to speak at the public hearing (June 24, 2025 · 4 PM) https://www.fairfaxcounty.gov/boardofsupervisors/june-24-2025-meeting
Even a short email or phone call to your district supervisor makes a real difference.
Thank you for standing with local businesses and keeping trash service competitive in Fairfax County.
