Why This Petition Matters Now

The ongoing human rights violations carried out by the Islamic Republic of Iran – including arbitrary detention, forced confessions, unfair trials, and executions – require immediate intervention from global leaders and the international community.

How the Iranian Government Is Using the Death Penalty to Suppress Dissent

In response to the recent nationwide protests, Iranian authorities have ramped up threats, arrests, severe punishment, and executions of individuals accused of dissent, protest, or perceived opposition to the state, marking an accelerated escalation of state violence.

Credible reporting from human rights organizations and independent media shows that Iran continues to impose the death penalty and other severe punishments against individuals accused in connection with protests or political dissent.

Weaponized Charges and Forced Confessions

These prosecutions often rely on vague and expansive charges such as “moharebeh” (محاربه — enmity against God) and “efsad-e fel-arz” (افساد فی‌الارض — corruption on Earth), as well as labels like “rioter” (اغتشاشگر) or “foreign agent” (عامل بیگانه).

Unfair Trials and the Role of "Death Judges"

They are also frequently presided over by Iran’s so-called “death judges,” officials widely documented for issuing expedited death sentences following coerced confessions and closed proceedings. These actions have resulted in a sharp increase in executions and an ongoing risk of death sentences being enforced against detainees, even as the world watches.

What We Are Demanding

Our Call to World Leaders, EU, and International Human Rights Bodies

We therefore call on the world's leaders, the European Union, and international human rights bodies —

  • including the United Nations Human Rights Office of the High Commissioner, and reputable NGOs like Human Rights Watch, Amnesty International USA, the Center for Human Rights in Iran (CHRI), the Human Rights Activists News Agency (HRANA), and the Abdorrahman Boroumand Center for Human Rights in Iran

— to take decisive measures right now by applying global pressure on Iran’s governing authorities (including the Supreme Leader, the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), and the judiciary) and demanding:

  1. An immediate end to executions in Iran.
  2. The reversal of all death sentences.
  3. The release of people unjustly detained for protest or dissent.

Our Call to the International Community

In addition, we call on the international community to act now and intervene in the following ways:

  1. Ensure that executions are stopped and that no new or existing death sentences are issued or enforced.
  2. Demand that all cases carrying the death penalty or severe punishment be removed from the authority of Iran’s death-sentence courts and judges.
  3. Demand that independent, internationally-appointed legal counsel be permitted to represent detainees, with full access to clients, evidence, and case files, in line with international fair-trial standards.
  4. Demand international accountability for systematic human rights violations.

The Iranian people need all available resources to pressure the IRGC and all branches of Iran's government to end these executions and release detained individuals.

We urge swift intervention and unified action from key political figures and human rights entities to hold the IRGC accountable. This cooperation is crucial to stopping the ongoing violations and secure the freedom of those wrongfully imprisoned or sentenced to death.

World Leaders: Please Note

Iranian authorities frequently attempt to evade international scrutiny by reclassifying protesters under alternative charges and labels while continuing executions. Such tactics must not be accepted as good-faith compliance with international norms.
