Humanoid Robots, Exoskeletons, and Cyborgs

(The following was written without ChatGPT, etc.)
While our petition is focused on Humanoid Robots, the reality is that – even in the domain of robotics – there will be diverse instantiations of these tools. In this update, I’d like to identify a spectrum of robotics pertaining to this area:
- The Humanoid Robot (Fully Autonomous): this hypothetical machine will be driven by advanced computers, enabling the machines to act autonomously. This is what most works of Science Fiction tend to describe.
- b) The Humanoid Robot (Remote Controlled): this variety of machine is likely to be what we first encounter. Though it may have some autonomous qualities, this variety of machine is best thought of as being ‘Remote Controlled’ – and operates most effectively with direct, or indirect human direction.
- Exoskeleton: the exoskeleton is traditionally thought of as a wearable / removable suit or augmentation that can both enhance human performance in a variety of ways as well as be ‘taken off’ or removed as needed.
- Cyborg: the Cyborg is a human being that has been augmented with various, basically permanent technologies – that enhance a range of skills.
These types of applied ‘Humanoid Robot’ adjacent technologies are likely, if not naturally, inclined to interconnect with one another. Indeed, futurist Ray Kurzweil argues that various Cyborg-like modifications will be necessary for humans to manage their / our technologies.
The purpose for this exploration of Humanoid Robot-adjacent technologies is to help better explore the scope and culture surrounding these things – and reinforce how essential it is for our communities to develop substantive perspectives on these developments.
