'The Turk' was a chess playing machine built in 1770. It was advertised as an autonomous robot that could beat any human player at chess. For many decades, the narrative among the general public was that 'the Turk' was a free-thinking, autonomous chess-playing robot -- and so it was advertised. In reality, however, 'the Turk' was a complex puppet -- and there was a human inside of it playing the game, beating the majority of the people who played it.
I suspect most people allowed themselves to think that a 'chess playing robot' was possible in 1770 because they enjoyed the mystique. But the type of attitude that led to a little harmless deception in 1770 -- is not so harmless in 2025.
There are no laws or mores for these humanoid robots being made -- please sign and share the petition so that we can make some.
