I am, like many other people across the globe, an admirer of elephants. Their majesty, their intelligence, their familial bonds - it's all astonishing and awe-inspiring. However, these magnificent creatures are under threat in Zimbabwe due to sanctioned culling practices. Elephant culling involves the mass slaughter of these creatures, which is not only cruel but also devastating to their populations.

Worryingly, Zimbabwe is currently home to about 84,000 elephants, far more than its official carrying capacity of 50,000. This number, inflated due to a lack of predators and regular rains improving the elephants' food supply, has provoking calls for culling as a solution to supposed overpopulation. However, it is critical to remember elephants are a keystone species. They play a crucial role in shaping their habitat and maintaining biodiversity - their loss could trigger a cascade of negative ecological consequences.

Moreover, there are more ethical and effective alternatives for elephant population control, such as translocation or fertility control, which don't involve killing. Therefore, our demand is clear - Zimbabwe's government must stop the killing of elephants under the guise of culling.

Elephants are thought to be one of the most intelligent creatures on the planet, displaying characteristics such as self-awareness, empathy, and cooperation. Elephants do not just deserve to live - they contribute to the health and richness of the ecosystem in more ways than we can comprehend.
