Our fight is NOT over. DG is appealing Judge Abel’s lawful and rightful decision. In fact, ILSR.org is currently in the process of getting Judge Abel’s decision published, as it sets a precedence!!
What do we need to do now?
1. Contact the Tangipahoa Parish President/Council & ask for a moratorium on all new Dollar General stores in the parish. In the recent past we all participated in the Tangi2045 Survey, which was conducted so the Parish Council had public input FOR their new Comprehensive Plan. A moratorium is a fairly common thing to do, especially when considering the development of a new comprehensive plan and can last up to 12 months. Let’s urge our parish president & council members to take our concerns seriously. Contact information is listed below.
2. Appeals Judge’s will be assigned at a later date. Once that happens, we can send letters, just as we did to Judge Abel’s. We will want these judges to know the impact that DG will have on our health, safety & welfare.
3. There is a Parish Council meeting on Monday, Feb. 12th @ 5:30pm located at 206 E. Mulberry St, Amite, La 70422. Plan to attend if you would like to address the council members directly. Arrive a few moments earlier to fill out a paper if you’d like to speak. Here, we can ask for the consideration of a moratorium.
Thank you to everyone for staying involved! It is important that we remain engaged.
PLEASE email, call, & attend the meeting on Monday and feel free to use the information below when asking for a moratorium.
Please use the following considerations for enacting a moratorium on new development in our parish:
(1) input from parish constituents via the Tangi2045 Survey, specifically the new Comprehensive Plan
(2) the negative impacts of OVER-development in our rural areas, including commercial development without the protection of zoning
(3) how overdevelopment can impact our schools, traffic, and fire/police protection
(4) flooding that can occur as a result of overdevelopment
