I run a rescue centre, like many others across Australia, and we are all overwhelmed and at full capacity. We struggle daily to rehome the countless dogs that come into our care, abandoned, abused, and neglected. The heartbreaking reality is that despite our best efforts, thousands of dogs continue to suffer due to unregulated dog breeding and irresponsible ownership.

Every year, tens of thousands of unwanted puppies are born, only to face uncertain futures filled with neglect or abuse. Many of these puppies originate from irresponsible breeding practices driven by profit, without regard for the lives they bring into this world. Rescues like ours work tirelessly to save these innocent lives, but we are fighting a losing battle without legislative and regulatory change.

Australia is currently facing a crisis of unwanted dogs. Our shelters and rescue centres are bursting at the seams, trying desperately to care for and rehome as many animals as possible. Yet, without laws that regulate and restrict dog breeding, this cycle of suffering will only continue.

By enacting nationwide legislation to regulate dog breeding, we can give rescues like ours a real chance to save and rehome dogs in need. This initiative should include strict licensing requirements, mandatory health checks, and severe penalties for those who breed irresponsibly or without proper accreditation.

We urge the government to act swiftly and decisively to implement these changes. The lives of countless dogs are hanging in the balance, and only through responsible regulation can we stop the cycle of suffering and give these animals the future they deserve.
