Laura Poplin started this petition to Boston City Council Education Committee and

We are members of the Mission Hill School community -- parents, students, friends, and others.

Over the last month, we have watched BPS leadership take actions that are tearing apart the school, at a time when our most vulnerable students desperately need support and stability.

We are aware of the concerns over how the school has handled behavioral issues over the last several years -- and understand that some changes may be needed.

But what BPS leadership has been doing has been unacceptable -- imposing dramatic, destructive changes with absolutely no coordination with the staff, the school governance board or the broader parent community:

  • In August, BPS abruptly put our co-teacher leaders on leave with very little information.
  • At the end of the day on Friday, September 10th (the 2nd day of school), two long-standing Mission Hill teachers were suddenly placed on administrative leave.
  • BPS did not inform families of this action in any way -- keeping parents in the dark even as students returned to school on Monday.
  • Three of the staff who were removed from the school were Black. This is deeply troubling for our community. There are no longer any lead teachers of color above the kindergarten level.
  • Due to these actions, on Monday, September 13th, Mission Hill staff had to accommodate roughly 35 children without their normal classrooms, during a pandemic.
  • Given how little communication there has been from the district, we cannot help but see this as a strategy to undo our participatory, community-run school.
  • We fear that BPS may be working to destabilize the school in order to close it.
  • The articles that have appeared in the press do not fully capture the diverse, passionate, and caring school that our children attend.

We have lost our trust in BPS leadership -- because their actions have been so disruptive to the safety and well-being of the students in the school, and so disrespectful to the broader school community.

We demand that BPS leadership immediately meets with the full school community.

We demand that BPS leadership speaks to why they have taken such disruptive actions.

We demand that BPS leadership commits to working with the families, the staff and the school governance board going forward, to preserve the school, rather than to dismantle it.
