The Issue

Paedophiles and sexual predators can attempt to contact children on any social media platform, but Snapchat is unique in that messages, chats, and entire conversations are designed to disappear automatically. This feature makes it extremely difficult for victims, parents, and law enforcement to trace, report, or prove grooming and predatory behaviour. By allowing messages to vanish without a permanent record, Snapchat creates an environment that can be exploited by abusers and endanger children.

In a world where digital interaction is constant, Snapchat's "disappearing messages" gives potential predators an alarming level of freedom to manipulate and threaten children without fear of accountability. It's imperative that this feature be removed or reformed to ensure the safety of our children. Permanent message retention should be an option, enabling parents and guardians to monitor their children's interactions more effectively.

According to a 2020 report by the NSPCC (National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children), about one in five children aged 7–12 experienced an inappropriate interaction online. Snapchat's disappearing messages can facilitate these unwanted and dangerous encounters, making it challenging for officials to track and take decisive action against offenders involved in child exploitation.

Current tools available on Snapchat do not compensate for the significant risks posed by the disappearing message feature. While screenshots and message saving options exist, they're often unreliable and can easily be circumvented. Implementing mandatory retention of chat history would prevent many harmful situations and support victims in seeking justice.

We urge Snapchat to prioritize the safety of children above the novelty of ephemeral messaging. By adopting a more secure approach, Snapchat can contribute positively to safeguarding its platform from misuse. We call upon Snapchat to modify the "disappearing messages" feature to allow for optional record-keeping measures that aid in preventing online grooming and ensure a permanent record in instances of predation.
