Stop Dickson County Sheriff from pursuing ICE agenda Memorandum of Agreement 287g

Stop Dickson County Sheriff from pursuing ICE agenda Memorandum of Agreement 287g
The Issue
Here in Dickson Count TN my friends and family live in fear under the looming threat of the Memorandum of Agreement 287g. This agreement allows our local officials to perform Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) duties, essentially turning our local police into an extension of ICE. This blending of responsibilities is not only terrifying but unjust, as it forces our local authorities to act as enforcers in a regime instilling fear in our communities. The 287g agreement deputizes local law enforcement to enforce federal immigration laws, a task for which they are neither trained nor equipped. This could potentially lead to racial profiling and discrimination against citizens and non-citizens alike. The agreement has already sown seeds of distrust in our communities, making interactions with law enforcement fraught with fear and anxiety. According to the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU), such practices undermine community safety and trust, making immigrants and citizens less likely to report crimes or cooperate with police investigations. This inefficiency diverts local resources away from pressing community issues, focusing instead on a federal agenda that divides rather than unites. The growth of local police power through federal programs like 287g feeds into an alarming trend of militarization in local law enforcement, risking our local freedoms and deteriorating the quality of civic life. Moreover, families are living in constant dread, worried that routine interactions can lead to severe immigration consequences for their loved ones. In a democratic society, we expect our local officials to work for the collective good of the community, not to enforce a federal policy that reduces trust among community members and local authorities. We must keep federal and local law enforcement responsibilities separate to preserve the rights and safety of all individuals in our community. We call upon our Sheriff to discontinue the pursuit of a 287g agreement. To protect our local law enforcement from turning into ICE enforcers. We need solutions that foster trust and cooperation, not fear and division. Please join me in demanding an end to Memorandum of Agreement 287g in our community by signing this petition. We do NOT agree with our sheriff that Dickson should be the next county ICE invades.
