Houston is facing an urbanization crisis, and it's hitting our greenspaces hard. Every day, relentless construction projects are transforming our city, but the cost is more than just endless traffic jams.

Houston is a wetland with a natural drainage system that flows into the gulf. This rapid urbanization not only increases the risk of catastrophic flooding but also outsizes the impact of climate change on our region. The more we build without regard for natural spaces and drainage, the more we undermine our city's own defenses.

In addition to the reduction of beneficial natural wetland, each year our city sinks due to excessive groundwater extractions. Land sinkage compounds the issue of flood risks even further by encouraging water retention in unwanted areas with inefficient drainage. 

It's not just about flooding. The air pollution is getting unbearable, and the loss of green spaces only aggravates the situation. We need to preserve these pockets of nature, which act as vital lungs for our city and provide necessary relief from the urban sprawl.
Our beloved greenspaces, like Hermann Park, are shrinking as big corporations expand private ventures, reducing public access to these natural refuges.

Recently, there have been many propositions from large corporations encouraging the construction of AI data centers in the Houston area. Their construction in addition to the already rapid ongoing urbanization could be environmentally catastrophic to the residents and wildlife of Houston. 
Data centers are proving to mentally and physically affect individuals within miles of their grounds. Many affected by these data centers have reported hearing loss (due to the constant noise pollution), sleep disruption, anxiety spikes, surging utility costs, energy grid instability (Houston is already notorious for grid failures during harsh conditions), and water depletion. 
These are only the effects observed and experienced from humans. Native wildlife is already struggling to keep up with the rapid urbanization. The addition of data centers would forever change Houstons ecosystem, harm it's wildlife, and soil it’s uniquely beautiful charm.

We need a clear, decisive stand to protect Houston from being consumed by data centers and other developments that threaten our environment. We have a responsibility to the current and future residents of Houston to maintain these green havens. It's time to say no to unnecessary urbanization and detrimental data centers.
