Stop decreasing shark populations — Help us raise public knowledge about sharks!

The issue

As I have grown older, I’ve come to notice that media like Jaws has created misconceptions portraying sharks as mindless killers, negatively impacting society. I have been fascinated with sharks most of my life, watching shark documentaries and movies, focusing mainly on their cool exterior. However, these misconceptions have influenced commercial fishing and minimal shark conservation support, leading to declining shark populations.

Against public perceptions, most shark attacks arise from curiosity or mistaken identity, rather than mindless violence like some media suggests, with studies showing sharks don't normally view humans as prey. Sharks are apex predators that maintain ecological roles, strengthening ecosystems' populations through 465 different species, but still, around 100 million sharks are killed each year due to human intervention. Sharks positively impact marine populations, influencing genetics, species interactions, biodiversity and ocean health by hunting the weakest species in the food chain.

To combat misconceptions and gather support for shark conservation, this petition aims to educate the public through newfound knowledge. Research has concluded that individuals with greater knowledge are more likely to promote protective legislation and shark conservation. Media outlets need to convey truthful information that displays sharks’ ecological roles and behaviour to promote change. Educating the public with reliable information can change public perceptions to acknowledge shark benefits.

Beyond The Teeth can help sharks by increasing conservation efforts to positively impact shark perceptions and implement policies to protect sharks. Create a future where sharks are protected for their roles in our marine ecosystems. Sign our petition today!!!
