The Issue

We are parents, neighbors, and school staff demanding the Washington County City Board immediately deny the Vaughn Metal Recycling Facility near our schools. Approving this facility on East Highway 412 is a direct threat to the daily safety of our children, staff, and community.

This metal recycling business wants to set up their big shop less than one minute from our five public schools (Lakeside Jr High School, Don Tyson School of Innovation, Turnbow Elementary School, Sonora Middle School, Sonora Elementary School) on East HWY 412. This will create a constant nightmare right where our kids are traveling:

  • Bus Traffic vs. Dump Trucks: Every day, 30+ school buses carrying hundreds of students use this part of Highway 412. This new facility will add a minimum of 100 client cars and massive, slow scrap metal dump trucks right into that mix.
  • Guaranteed Accidents: This high volume of slow-moving industrial traffic will completely bottleneck the 65 MPH highway during school drop-off and pickup. It's not a question of if there will be a major accident with a school bus or family car, but when.
  • Metal Scraps on the Highway: Dump trucks carry loose metal. We risk having sharp, dangerous debris falling directly onto the highway, which could blow out tires on our buses and cars.
  • Contamination Risk: This kind of industrial operation also poses a serious long-term threat to our local water supply.

WE NEED YOUR HELP! We need to send a clear message to the Washington County Planning Board before their vote on October 30th.

Sign Now: Your signature proves that our community's safety matters more than this business's profit.
Tell the County Board NO: We urge the Washington County Planning Board and ARDOT to reject this facility's permits and keep our roads safe for students, families, retirees and community!

Please sign and share this petition with every neighbor, teacher, and parent you know!
