The Issue

My name is unknown to you, but my story is all too familiar. I had an innocuous interaction with a girl's boyfriend, which evoked anger in her. Instead of addressing her concerns to me directly, she chose to wage a silent war by spreading rumors about me on social media, sheltered by anonymity.

This is not just my story. It's the narrative of countless victims who are subjected to hate comments and rumors bathed in anonymity across various social platforms. Anonymous hate speech is a rampant cyberbullying tactic that has dire effects on mental health. According to a 2017 survey by Ditch the Label, 17% of children are now victims of cyberbullying, with most of it taking place on social media(1).

The cloak of anonymity emboldens those intending to cause harm. They “subtweet,” or post negative comments about someone without directly mentioning them, creating an environment of fear and distress.

Freedom of speech is the cornerstone of any democratic society. However, when this freedom is used as a weapon to inflict harm, it's time to draw the line. With this petition, we call upon all social media platforms to scrutinize their current policies and take firm actions against anonymous hate speech. We urge them to develop robust mechanisms that deter individuals from weaponizing anonymity.

The internet should be a place of connection, not division; a platform for understanding, not ungrounded hate. Let's stand together for a safer, healthier online community. Sign and share this petition to make our voices heard and take a step towards a more respectful digital environment.
