The covert speed camera vans in New Zealand are nothing more than revenue-gathering machines, and their current operation lacks transparency and fairness. How is this fair? How does this contribute to road safety?

I, along with countless other New Zealanders, have fallen victim to these covert operations. These vans aren't stationed at accident-prone areas to save lives; they are placed in spots with high traffic flow solely to catch the highest number of drivers off guard. This isn't about safety, it's about catching people out and making easy money.

Research consistently shows that clear and visible speed enforcement zones are far more effective in reducing accidents and promoting road safety than concealed traps. The lack of transparency and accountability in the current setup undermines public trust and does not contribute to making our roads any safer. The claimed purpose of these vans - to improve road safety - remains unsupported by any convincing evidence.

A 2019 study published by the New Zealand Transport Agency indicates that visible and well-marked speed enforcement significantly increases compliance with speed limits, leading to safer roads. However, the haphazard and concealed approach we currently have not only fails to achieve these outcomes but frustrates and financially strains law-abiding citizens.

We demand an immediate revamping of the speed camera van policies in New Zealand. The approach should be about road safety, not revenue. We propose a system where speed camera vans are clearly marked, more visible to approaching motorists, and placed with clear signage especially at locations with a history of speed-related incidents. This will deter speeding effectively and restore public confidence in road safety measures.
