Petition updateStop contaminated cabin air in aircraft!Aerotoxic Syndrome - Is Your Gut Health Being Affected? - Written by Angel Brain

“One of the first symptoms I started to experience, whilst unknowingly being exposed to contaminated cabin air, whilst in my service to Gulf Air, was a dramatic change to my gastrointestinal health system.

Formerly I had a stomach like a Sherman tank; I had always chosen to eat well preferring savoury to sweet foods and avoiding processed foods whenever possible. Definitely avoiding fast foods with my background in health and beauty. That all changed and I felt like my guts were constantly in turmoil. This proceeded to get worse due to more exposures in the multiple ‘fume events’ I experienced.

The doctors at the Gulf Air clinic were unable to diagnose why I was suffering so badly and Gastroenteritis or Delhi belly was apparently the cause of my discomfort. After being grounded and forced to resign in 1995 due to unexplained ill health, this unfortunately became one of the long-term associated Aerotoxic Syndrome symptoms for me. Leading to two years of gagging and throwing up black bile, not being able to eat solid foods or digest/eliminate them. Accompanied by dramatic weight loss due to malabsorption. Diarrhoea and constipation. I switched to juicing in order not to starve to death. I also tested positive for three types of parasites. (One of the perils of international travel, worth looking into.)

It was the start of my journey to try and find the balance. I saw many nutritionists etc, and over the years I have tried many diets/supplements, some have helped, some have not. It is ongoing and down to trial and error for me, everyone is different - we have biochemical, physiological and genetic (as well as psychological) individuality - so our requirements vary from one person to another. Different types of diet suit different people - and that is something we need to discover for ourselves, with some professional help.

I found the most helpful diet for me is an organic paleo diet, keeping my foods very simple and not over supplementing. I source supplements choosing products that are organic and contain the minimum of fillers, binders, emulsifiers, colourings, etc. - and AVOID synthetic ones. www.cytoplan.co.uk is an excellent company based in the UK.*

Many of our Aerotoxic aircrew have reported changes to their gut health in the form of Irritable Bowel Disease (IBS), Crohn’s Disease, Leaky Gut, Constipation, Diarrhoea, Bloating and discomfort. Food allergies and intolerance, as well as many other digestive issues. Essentially our gut micro biota becomes radically changed and the healthy balance of the microorganisms can be lost due to exposure to chemicals, toxins and medical drugs. (This has been noted in those suffering from Gulf War Syndrome, Farmers, Sheep dippers and rural residents living near farms using pesticides; all parties being exposed to organophosphates and pesticides.)

⁃ Intestinal Hyperpermeability in Gulf War Veterans with Chronic Gastrointestinal Symptoms (2022)
‘GI symptoms (e.g. diarrhea, constipation, bloating, and abdominal pain) reported by these veterans accounted for the majority of complaints. It is estimated that over 50% of veterans deployed in the Gulf during the Gulf war in 1990–1991 developed acute gastroenteritis.’

Mitochondria-Microbiota Interaction in Neurodegeneration (2021)
‘Mitochondrial dysfunction reduces the energy available to the immune system and impairs the immune system's ability to keep the gut microbiota under control. This, then, leads to dysbiosis as well (Yardeni et al., 2019; Jackson and Theiss, 2020).’

Prominent among these changes is the presence of an excess of fungal organisms which ferment carbohydrates generating ethanol. The most common fungal infection in the gut is candida.
A brief explanation of CANDIDA ALBICANS and other gastrointestinal issue are outlined in the following; Candida overgrowth can inflame and weaken the walls of the intestines, releasing toxic by-products causing digestive disorders to depression. It is most often noticed on the skin, mouth/tongue and vaginal infections.
GUT DYSBIOSIS (FERMENTATION) is recognised and is a not uncommon in our society, but rarely discussed. A condition known since the 1930s, colloquially as ‘auto-brewery’ syndrome which can result in people becoming intoxicated without consuming any alcohol. It is all generated in the gut. For those who eat a diet high in carbohydrates, it is known from laboratory studies that the alcohol produced in normal subjects can give rise to detectable levels of alcohol, when they are fed only carbohydrates.
HYPOGLYCAEMIA is also a condition which is known to induce ethanol and acetone production in the body. It is associated with food craving and with the metabolic breakdown of body fats which releases acetone in the breath. And with the prolonged use of low carbohydrate diets. Note: this would increase the Breathalyzer reading if it is not excluded by the sensors in the device used to make these measurements. Acetone gives rise to very similar symptoms of intoxication to alcohol.
METABOLIC ACIDOSIS. Which is also known to be associated with alcohol intake and ketoacidosis due to starvation and compromised liver function. It is markedly exacerbated by prolonged diarrhoea which is a feature of her dysfunctional gut. Symptoms include muscle weakness, pain, heart arrhythmia and changes in respiratory patterns. The condition is serious and can be fatal.
MALABSORPTION…. Malabsorption is a condition caused by the decreased ability to digest and/or absorb nutrients from food. It is seen with a variety of diseases and can lead to general malnutrition or to symptoms associated with deficiencies in specific nutrients. These conditions are also associated with heavy use of antibiotics, painkillers, and poor diets affecting the friendly bacteria needed to maintain good gut and vaginal/bowel health.
I have noted over the past few years that reports of aircrew being intoxicated and being arrested for being over the limit whilst on duty or driving have increased. This leads me to think that aircrew being exposed to contaminated cabin air are suffering unknowingly from the above gut issues.
Enjoying a glass of wine with a pizza, can lead to serious consequences!
Allowing the allotted times for blood alcohol levels to drop if you have been drinking, will in effect become the opposite, as BAC’s will increase rather than fall, especially if you are suffering from the above conditions. The effects of these can be so severe, you can actually get a DUI if you suffer from the syndrome and drive.

If you are concerned that you may be affected by any disorders mentioned. Please discuss this with your Doctor or Practitioner.
Functional/Environmental doctors* can assist with specialist tests that can help to identify if you are suffering from these gut health issues.
There is a an Organic Acids test offered by Great Plains Laboratory USA, or Biolab. UK,* which is comprehensive in determining gut health issues.

‘The complex bi-directional neuroimmune communication maintains each organ’s physiological balance and functions in the body. The central and peripheral neuronal circuits, immune cells and cytokines, neuro-endocrine hormonal systems, gut microbiota and their metabolites, and the blood-brain and intestinal mucosal barriers are important players throughout this regulatory network. Any disturbance in these systems alters the delicate balance between health and disease.’
