For two or three years some airlines have been introducing ‘signature scents’ onboard their aircraft. They claim this is to make the customer experience more enjoyable or memorable. Some of these scents are designed to calm or reinvigorate while others create a feeling of harmony and wellbeing. These scents are manufactured with the use of chemicals which can be harmful to health. They are an additional hazard for those who suffer with chemical sensitivity and can be dangerous for allergy sufferers.

They also hide the smells from fuel, oil and hydraulic fluids which enter the ventilation system on bleed-air aircraft (all aircraft except the Boeing 787).
Passengers and crew onboard these particular aircraft are now unaware when fume events occur - unless the smell of the fumes is stronger than the artificial scent or if smoke is present.
This how the airline industry are dealing with the problem of contaminated air in aircraft.
Innovative? - If you can’t smell the fumes there is no longer a problem - right?!!!!!
WRONG!
For the past couple of years we believed that crew were simply not reporting fume events at certain airlines anymore!
This is of serious concern because those injured on ‘scented aircraft’ by organophosphates and VOC’s from the air provided via the aircraft engines will actually NEVER make the connection to the aircraft.
No doubt more airlines will be signing up to this - to help hide the aviation industry’s dirty practice of toxic, contaminated air in aircraft.
Fortunately they are not overloading the pilot’s workplace (the aircraft cockpit) with scents to hide the fumes from them. That would just be stupid and irresponsible.
