Stop construction pollution in Mumbai
The Issue
Mumbai, our beloved city, is suffocating under a shroud of dust and pollution from rampant construction activities. Once celebrated for its refreshing sea breeze and relatively clean air, Mumbai now battles with an Air Quality Index (AQI) that has reached perilously high levels. Disturbingly, there have been instances where our AQI exceeded even that of Delhi, a city infamous for its pollution struggles.
My concerns aren't distant or abstract. This issue hits home for me, quite literally. Living in Bandra, I'm in the epicenter of ceaseless construction and redevelopment. The air around my home is thick with red construction dust. What's supposed to be the sanctuary of my windows remains shut, as opening them only invites the pollution indoors. The impact on my health is undeniable—I’ve developed a persistent cough and am seriously contemplating moving away. Yet, where does one escape when the entire city seems engulfed by this relentless haze?
This struggle is personal on another level. My parents, both in their 80s, are forced to breathe this toxic air every day. I’m deeply worried about their health and the health of all vulnerable groups—children, the elderly, and those with preexisting conditions—who are at significant risk due to this pollution.
We cannot idly stand by and watch as our city becomes unlivable. The rise of Mumbai into a modern skyline should not come at the cost of our health and wellbeing. We need a solution that balances development with sustainability and considers the residents' right to a healthy environment.
We demand:
1. Strict regulations for construction sites to minimize dust and pollution.
2. Mandatory air quality monitoring stations at major construction sites.
3. Rigorous penalties for builders and contractors who neglect pollution control measures.
4. Implementation of green belt zones around new construction projects to reduce dust dispersal.
5. State government intervention to ensure adherence to air quality improvement protocols.
Mumbai must lead the way in creating urban spaces that prioritize both progress and the health of its citizens. Let’s reclaim the air we breathe, for ourselves, for our children, and for the generations to come.
Sign this petition to urge the government and relevant authorities to take immediate, decisive action to curb construction pollution and protect the wellbeing of Mumbai's residents. Together, we can make our voices heard for a cleaner, healthier Mumbai.
