STOP co-location at Hawkins High School

STOP co-location at Hawkins High School
The Issue
Imagine being told that starting next year you will be required to share 33% of the space in your home as well as 33% of the access to all of your appliances, outlets, and utilities and the potential conflicts that will arise throughout your days as a result. Such is the situation Hawkins High School finds itself in as Stella Charter has been offered the space it is seeking on our campus.
What is Co-Location?
- It is a process under CA state law (Prop 39) that
allows a charter school to take over space in a
public school. - It forces public schools to compete with charter
schools for space, resources, and students. - It often causes division on the campus between
the schools and even in the community.
Why does this matter?
- Augustus F. Hawkins High School is a Community School with both a School for Advanced Studies and a Magnet that strives to meet the diverse needs of our students. Hawkins is also a priority and BSAP school, We DO NOT have extra space.
- Students and families are in danger of losing up to 13 classrooms and of losing full access to: athletic field, garden, library, dance room, maker space, computer labs, multi-purpose room, School Psychologist private space, parking lot, cafeteria, gym, restrooms, counseling offices, storage rooms, teacher meeting and professional development, parent center, B&G staff, etc.
- Potential increase in safety issues due to overpopulation and differences in two schools' practices and handling. Different schedules, different school visions.
The school board passed a policy in 2024 to avoid co-location at campuses that are priority schools, or community schools or BSAP schools. Hawkins High School needs your support to STOP CO-LOCATION. Co-location will decrease the quality of student services caused by a loss of space. Please sign today and share with others. Help us STOP CO-LOCATION at HAWKINS HS. Sign today!
