Stop Climate Degradation, Act Now and Save Earth

The Issue

Time is running out for our planet and as the Amazon “the lungs of our planet” burn before our eyes, we must act now to fight climate change or doom this and future generations into an age of extinction. The next generation may never see the Amazon rainforest, coral reefs, or a polar bear.  But the spectacular biodiversity existing on our planet, our home, is more than just beautiful, it is what keeps us alive. Our destruction of ecological life support systems will literally kill us all.

My name is Anish and I am writing about SDG 13, climate action. You may think Climate action and climate change are same things, but they are actually very different. Climate action is action taken against climate change, which is the change in climate. Usually when we say climate change, we mean the man-made climate change which is usually called environmental degradation

The time has come to taking to the streets and protesting against your government's inaction on climate change. The time to act is now and we have years together to add our voices to call for strong, unified climate action from our government.

It is an environmental issue that has been plaguing is for many years. In the world, there are factories. These factories produce the products we use today. But these factories produce certain greenhouse gases. When these greenhouse gases are present in the atmosphere, they trap the heat from the sun's light rays that bounce back from Earth. This is known as the greenhouse effect. This can helpful if there is a balanced amount of these gases in the atmosphere. The world remains relatively warm this way, and it retains that temperature. However, factories are producing an unhealthy amount of these gases and now, the Earth is getting too warm causing the climate to change. This also known as global warming.

Due to global warming, natural disasters like floods and draughts have been increasing. Floods due to glaciers melting and draughts due to scarcity of rain. Flooding usually occurs on the countries that are aligned with coastal areas like Pakistan and Indonesia and draughts occur in places far away from coastal areas due to scarcity of water, like Libya and Chile. Sudden change in ocean currents is also a major factor resulting in climatic change. The plate movements under the ocean bed have resulted in many eruptions of volcanoes and huge wave formation which have changed the climates of the regions surrounding the epicenter.

Some solutions to stop global warming are:

  • Stopping deforestation
  • Gradually overcoming the fossil fuel industry
  • Going 100% eco-friendly
  • Using renewable energy
  • Plant More Carbon Dioxide consuming plants

Facts and figures:

  • In past years the United States has emitted over 15,000,000,000,000 pounds of greenhouse gases into the atmosphere, affecting the ecosystem and the lives of animals and plants
  • In 2022, 91% of carbon emissions come from the fossil fuel industry.
  •  All years from 2015 to 2022 are likely to be the eight warmest years on record
  • Over the last century, the average surface temperature of the Earth has increased by about 1.0° F
  • The global temperature has already risen 1.1ºC above the pre-industrial level
  • Global carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions declined by 5.2 per cent in 2020 due to lowered energy demand caused by COVID-19-induced social and economic disruptions. But with the phasing out of COVID-related restrictions, energy-related CO2 emissions for 2021 rose by 6 per cent, reaching their highest level ever
  • About one third of global land areas will suffer at least moderate drought by 2100
  • The sea level could rise 30 to 60 centimetres by 2100, even if greenhouse gas emissions are sharply reduced and global warming is limited to well below 2°C.
  • The sea level could rise 30 to 60 centimetres by 2100, even if greenhouse gas emissions are sharply reduced and global warming is limited to well below 2°C.
  • 3 billion to 3.6 billion people live in contexts that are highly vulnerable to climate change.

Interesting Quotes on climate change:

  • “Earth provides enough to satisfy every man’s need, but not every man’s greed” – Mahatma Gandhi
  • “You cannot get through a single day without having an impact on the world around you. What you do makes a difference, and you have to decide what kind of difference you want to make” – Jane Goodall
  • “The challenge of pollution and global warmingis no longer the science, or the rate of innovation, but the rate of implementation: We have clean solutions; now lets bundle them and install them” – Jens Martin Skibsted
  • “On climate change we often don’t fully appreciate that it is a problem that is waiting to happen” – Kofi Annan
  • “To all of you who choose to look the other way every day because you seem more frightened of the changes that can prevent catastrophic climate change than the catastrophic climate change itself. Your silence is worst of all.” - Greta Thunberg
  • “If you really think that the environment is less important than the economy, try holding your breath while you count your money.” - Guy McPherson

Now, I just can't tell others to help earth and not do it myself, so let's see my action taken!!

My action taken:

  • Planting 3 trees
  • Trying to reduce my home's carbon emmissions
  • Making compost out of Bio-degradable waste
  • Spreading awareness about climate change with this petition by sharing this petition
  • Starting a "Save earth, There is no planet B" initiative in home
  • Avoiding single use plastic
  • Avoiding wastage of electricity
  • Avoiding wastage of water
  • Reusing most of the things

Add your voice today if you want to hear our world leaders’ plans to mitigate emissions by 2024, and dramatically reduce emissions to reach net-zero emissions by mid-century! I would also like to request everyone to support the "Save Earth" League. Stop  Environmental degradation and start climate action!!

Please, sign and share this petition and send a strong message to everyone to take action on climate change
