Submission
On 25 November 2024, marking the start of 16 Days of Activism, we formally submitted the petition to Big Concerts, the Department of Home Affairs, and the Department of Sports, Arts, and Culture. The submission included a comprehensive petition overview, outlining its purpose and addressing key points relevant to each entity.
Additionally, we provided a petition signature list with the names of 51,330 signatories, along with over 700 statements from individuals detailing their reasons for supporting this cause.
Our petition aimed to raise awareness about the broader implications of allowing Chris Brown, who has a well-documented history of violence against women, including 28 subsequent accusations of violent conduct, to perform in South Africa, particularly in the context of the ongoing gender-based violence crisis in the country. We are challenged the Department of Home Affairs to revoke Chris Brown's visa and declare Chris Brown an undesirable person under Section 30 of the Immigration Act.
Most importantly, we demanded accountability to ensure that future decisions regarding entry into South Africa align with the principles of respect, safety, and justice that our nation aspires to uphold, as well as the zero tolerance for GBVF outlined in the National Strategic Plan implemented by the government in 2020.
Outcome of the Chris Brown Petition
Despite our efforts, neither the Department of Home Affairs, the Department of Sport and Culture, nor Big Concerts responded to our petition or to inquiries from journalists who reached out to them.
We are deeply disappointed that South Africa, its leaders, and its society welcomed an artist with such a violent history, sending a clear message about where this country truly stands on addressing the epidemic of gender-based violence.
Tragically, just days after the concerts, South Africa witnessed some of the most horrific GBV and femicide cases, reinforcing the long-lasting impact such decisions have on our society.
Women For Change remains unwavering in our commitment to advocating for change through strategic and impactful efforts. This situation highlights the urgent need to hold institutions accountable and to persist in building a society where GBVF is unequivocally condemned and no longer tolerated.
