The Issue

The Longboat Key Pass bridge is an iconic part of our community, providing a vital connection and playing a central role in the daily lives of residents and visitors alike. Proposed changes to this structure threaten not only its character but also the safety and usability that many have come to rely on. We must act now to prevent these alterations which could severely impact the area's environment and our quality of life.

FDOT has made it abundantly clear that it favors a 78 foot high fixed bridge for Longboat Pass.  That would make it the 3rd highest bridge in the State of Florida, behind only the Sunshine Sky Way and Jacksonville bridges.    It is totally out of scale with Longboat Pass, which is only 1000 feet wide, much narrower than the John Ringling span.    The height would also pose a serious challenge for elderly bikers and pedestrians.  And it will do little to alleviate traffic, which is caused by other factors.

Longboat Key is cherished by its community for its natural beauty and accessibility. The bridge, in particular, stands as a testament to our commitment to preserving the character of our surroundings. Maintaining a minimal height is crucial, not merely for aesthetic reasons but for ensuring safety for all who cross it. Any extreme changes could disrupt this delicate balance, potentially undermining the community's character, increasing congestion, and posing hazards for both pedestrians and drivers.

Moreover, the feasibility of the proposed changes is questionable. The implementation could lead to extended construction periods, traffic disruptions, and unnecessary expenses that taxpayers would bear. This alteration lacks justification given the existing structure's successful accommodation of traffic and pedestrian flow over the years. The risk of altering something that works well outweighs any potential, speculative benefits suggested by planners.

Let us stand together as a community to voice our concerns and prioritize the preservation of our community's character and safety. By signing this petition, you are urging the relevant authorities to reconsider the proposed changes to the Longboat Key Pass bridge and protect our ability to access Anna Maria while bicycling or walking. Please add your name to this cause; let's keep Longboat Key accessible and beautiful for generations to come.
