Stop businesses from selling customer data

The Issue

Every year, countless individuals find themselves at the mercy of an industry that prioritizes profits over privacy. As someone directly impacted by this, I've witnessed firsthand the aftermath of data breaches that consumers like us have no control over. These breaches, caused by businesses trading our data without our consent, have left many with severely lowered credit scores, along with overwhelming financial burdens. It's devastating knowing that the hard work and financial responsibility we've maintained can be tarnished overnight by the careless activities of corporations.

Such violations of privacy aren't isolated incidents—they are becoming more frequent and more severe. According to a report by the Identity Theft Resource Center, in 2021 alone, there were 1,862 data breaches in the United States, exposing over 189 million sensitive records. What’s more alarming is that these breaches aren’t fully prevented or adequately apologized for by the companies responsible. Instead, consumers like you and I are left to pick up the pieces of our shattered financial landscapes.

The sale of our personal data without explicit consent is not only unethical, but it should be illegal. It's time for legislative action to be taken to hold these companies accountable. We need laws that not only prohibit the commercial trade of our data but also set strict penalties for violations. This includes enforcing more rigorous data protection standards and requiring businesses to obtain clear consent before using our information.

Furthermore, it's crucial to support the introduction of consumer protection laws akin to the EU’s General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), which provides citizens with greater control over their personal data. Implementing similar regulations would be a significant step forward in our fight to protect consumer information in America.

Join me in demanding that our legislators take necessary and immediate action. Let’s work together to ensure businesses are held accountable and our personal information is safe and secure. Sign this petition to stop the unchecked sale of our data and to provide stronger protections for us all.
