Stop Bus Drivers from Endangering Lives on Chapman's Peak Drive
The Issue
Only a few weeks ago, a cyclist tragically lost his life and two more were injured after colliding with a bus on Chapman’s Peak Drive. One would expect a profound awakening and a questioning of bus drivers’ behavior and practices on Chapman’s Peak. Sadly, nothing seems to have changed.
What we’re calling for:
• a blanket prohibition of large buses to stop anywhere along Chapman’s Peak Drive until they can safely enter view points.
• redesigning of the Chapman’s Peak Lookout Point access to allow large buses to safely turn in and pull out of there (that is where the fatal accident recently was) and of any view point where buses cannot enter safely.
• the installation of cameras to monitor each and every view point entry and exit.
• the enforcement of the road rules and regulations for all users and especially large buses: stay in your lane and do not overtake in blind corners! Please reach out to the author should you have any other suggestions.
How many bus-related fatalities must Chapman’s Peak Drive register before some actions are taken? The scene witnessed here took place on Sunday the 14th of September around 9 a.m. several motorcycles and cyclists were put in egregious danger by bus drivers facing incoming traffic, parked in the wrong lane before attempting to enter a parking lot viewpoint.
What exactly happened?
Only a few weeks after, a cyclist tragically lost his life, we exited a blind corner to find a bus facing us, parked in our lane, attempting a slow maneuver in reverse to enter a view point!!! We were later informed that it was a regular occurrence, as buses don’t have enough space to turn around inside the parking. And indeed, a second bus proceeded to a similar maneuver a few minutes later!!! The question is… Why are bus drivers proceeding with such reckless maneuvers? Are a few tourists’ pictures really worth other people's lives? We recorded everything. We have all the evidence needed to act on it. We absolutely intend to press charges.
We confronted the Hylton Ross Touring's driver, who didn’t care. The Planet Africa Tours translator confirmed she was aware of the death that recently occurred in the area. She didn’t care. The maintenance team at Entilini Chapmans Peak Drive didn’t care. The SAPS didn’t come.
Nothing has changed. No awakening. No questioning. No lesson learned.
More death will occur.
Is it inevitable?
Things need to change, NOW!!! How many people have to lose their life for actions to be taken? We understand that those buses represent a real business and a lot of money, for the tour operators and for Entilini Chapmans Peak Drive.
However, we’re calling for:
• a blanket prohibition of large buses to stop anywhere along Chapman’s Peak Drive until they can safely enter view points.
• redesigning of the Chapman’s Peak Lookout Point access to allow large buses to safely turn in and pull out of there (that is where the fatal accident recently was) and of any view point where buses cannot enter safely.
• the installation of cameras to monitor each and every view point entry.
• the enforcement of the road rules and regulations for all users and especially large buses: stay in your lane and do not overtake in blind corners! Please reach out to the author should you have any other suggestions
Entilini Chapmans Peak Drive is happy to take the money but what do they do to protect other users of the road? There is not even cameras here!
SAPS didn’t care to come and no policing is done on this road!
City of CapeTown tourism: when will you put a stop to this murderous behavior?
Hylton Ross Touring how can your driver endanger other people’s lives like that and still be in your employment?
Anyone who was on Chapman’s Peak Drive this morning just before 9 a.m. and witnessed this incident, please come forward. If we do nothing, you may be the next one to be killed by those bus drivers. Enough is enough!
