Waverley Council has put the new draft Heritage Assessment up for public comment. There are some important additions proposed to the heritage items list in the Waverley Local Environment Plan (LEP) that governs development.
The draft includes a proposal for a new Urban Conservation Area covering Bondi Road, that runs from Watson St to Denham Street (shown in blue on the map). That means it's to be recognised as "an area which has a distinctive character of heritage significance which it is desirable to conserve" and will make it harder to demolish existing buildings which contribute to that heritage.
This is a great start, but we think it should extend from Park Parade to Denham St. The bit between Watson St and Park Parade contains lots of buildings that define the character of the Bondi Road shops, and not including it weakens the integrity of the whole strip.
