Stop ban on “Cheburashka” in Canada cinemas!

We desperately need your help and support.
As you probably know, there have been multiple requests to Canadian authorities from certain communities known to express hatred and harassment towards Russian-speaking immigrants to ban the recently released Russian movie “Cheburashka”. The requests have already resulted in banning the movie in Ottawa (CineStarz St Laurent Centre) and Montreal. The movie was announced to be shown in the theatres, but was later cancelled under the pressure of local Ukranian community.
The Ottawa, Toronto and Quebec Russian communities are appalled by the unprecedented decision to cancel this long-awaited movie, which carries a significant meaning to every member of our community and represents an important part of our cultural heritage that we strive to preserve and hand down to our children. Living so far away from our home country we treasure every chance to connect with our culture and it is very sad that this right has been taken from us in such an unprecedented manner. This act is all the more shocking given that we live in a multicultural country, that should respect rights of its citizens to celebrate their cultures.
The decision to cancel the above mentioned movie in Ottawa and Montreal cinemas goes against our community’s basic rights and freedoms protected by The Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms and violates one of its main principles, that is, preservation and protection of Canada’s multicultural heritage.
We truly believe that in a country like Canada it should be prohibited for one ethnic group to feel and act superior towards another ethnic group as well as dictate what is allowed or not allowed for them and we are not going to tolerate this oppression anymore.
We as representatives of Russian community in Ottawa, Toronto and Quebec demand that our right to expose our children and ourselves to our ethnic culture be respected and restored.
We are convinced that no political events should stand in the way or influence decisions to deprive anyone of their rights to enjoy and celebrate their culture.
We are asking you to sign this petition and support our Russian communities in Canada and North America.
