The Union Environment Ministry's renewed efforts to enable exploratory drilling for oil and gas in forest regions across India threatens our precious forest ecosystems and wildlife. Despite mounting evidence on the detrimental effects of such extraction processes on biodiversity, the initiative was streamlined, allowing for surveys and exploratory drilling in forest areas. As reported by Hindustan Times on August 5, 2024, the forest advisory committee even exempted the felling of 100 trees. Our forests are not mere resources to be exploited, they are life-sustaining ecosystems that support India's wildlife and also contribute to air purification, groundwater recharge, and climate control. By permitting such exploitative operations, we risk not only biodiversity loss, but also exacerbated climate change effects and potential displacement of forest-dwelling communities. For the sake of our country's environmental health and the welfare of future generations, we urge the Government of India to repeal this calamitous approval.
