The Issue

Attention: Hon. Stephen Lecce,

We are over 2K concerned parents contacting you to express our deep concern regarding the escalating incidents of antisemitism within Toronto schools.

Community members have shared incidents that have taken place at Faywood, Hodgson, Windfields and Northern of children performing Nazi salutes, drawing swastikas on bus windows, vandalizing bathrooms with antisemitic graffiti, Jewish stars being put on the desks of Jewish students to identify them, committing physical violence, and making threats and references to gas chambers, Hitler, and being sent back to concentration camps.

It is disheartening to learn of the apparent inadequacy in the TDSB’s response to these incidents. The safety and well-being of our children should be paramount, and it is clear that immediate action is necessary to address this disturbing trend. Jewish students should feel secure in their schools, and at present, this is far from their reality.

As concerned parents, we are united in our demand for swift and comprehensive action to ensure the safety and support of all students within the public school system. We call for uniform consequences for antisemitic behavior, whether on school grounds, buses, or during school-related activities. It appears that a lack of awareness and consistent protocols among school staff has contributed to the ineffective handling of these incidents. We urge the implementation of a clear and comprehensive plan to address antisemitism and its consequences, sending a strong message that such behaviour will not be tolerated.

Furthermore, we believe that education about the history and impact of antisemitism should be integrated into the curriculum immediately. Creating awareness and understanding is crucial in fostering a culture of tolerance and respect within our schools. Time is of the essence, and we implore you to treat this matter with the urgency it deserves.

We eagerly await your response outlining the specific steps that will be taken to address these concerns. The TDSB must be held accountable for ensuring the safety and well-being of all students in their care. Together, let us work towards creating an educational environment that is free from discrimination and promotes a sense of security for every child.

Thank you for your prompt attention to this matter.
