Stop Animal Sales: End the Suffering at Pet World, Bayshore Mall

Stop Animal Sales: End the Suffering at Pet World, Bayshore Mall
The Issue
We, the undersigned, demand an end to the sale of live animals at Pet World in Bayshore Mall, Ottawa. A recent incident involving a rabbit in critical condition—struggling to breathe and showing clear signs of distress—highlights the systemic neglect and inhumane treatment of animals at this store.
Pet stores like Pet World fail to meet even the most basic standards of care for rabbits. Rabbits are often confined to cramped enclosures with inadequate enrichment—sometimes with nothing more than a log and no hiding places. Rabbits require proper food, fresh water, unlimited hay, and safe spaces to feel secure, none of which are adequately provided in these environments.
Selling live animals in pet stores not only causes immense suffering but also encourages impulse buying, which often leads to abandonment or neglect once the animals leave the store. This isn’t just one isolated incident but part of a larger issue of unethical treatment of animals for profit.
We urge the management of Bayshore Mall, the owners of Pet World, and the City of Ottawa to prioritize animal welfare by:
1. Immediately ceasing the sale of all live animals at Pet World.
2. Partnering with local shelters to host adoption events instead of selling animals.
By ending the sale of live animals, we can reduce suffering, promote responsible pet ownership, and ensure humane practices in our community.
Together, we can stop this mistreatment and bring positive change for animals in Ottawa.
