CHEMUNG, N.Y. (WETM) — A man and a woman from Chemung are facing multiple animal cruelty charges after police found an emaciated horse, a dead pig, and four living pigs in a trailer in the woods.
Nickolas Stevens and Kelly Stevens were arrested following an animal cruelty investigation that started with a report about strange noises coming from a wooded area. Elmira Animal Control reported that the New York State Police were called to the area of Simkin Road and Passmore Road in the Town of Chemung at about 6 p.m. on Jan. 6 for the report. The trooper who responded found a stock trailer parked in the woods with a horse and five pigs inside and called Elmira Animal Control. Animal control says that its investigation found that the animals inside the trailer were in serious physical condition. One of the pigs was dead, and the horse was emaciated.
Officers called a local equine veterinarian to the scene to evaluate and treat the horse. Due to the severity of the horse’s condition, it was humanely euthanized. The pigs were taken to the Elmira Animal Shelter for further evaluation and treatment.
Nickolas and Kelly Stevens were each charged with six counts of cruelty to animals (a class A misdemeanor) following Elmira Animal Control’s investigation. Each charge is punishable by up to one year in jail, a $1,000 fine, or both.
After they were arrested, the pair were released on appearance tickets. They will appear in the Town of Chemung Justice Court at a later date.
