The Issue

For over three years, I have witnessed a heart-wrenching reality unfold right in front of my house on Old Lawtey Road, also known as NE 28th Ave, in Starke, Florida. This road, particularly near the creek, has become a notorious site for the abandonment of puppies, kittens, senior, and disabled animals. It is agonizing to see these innocent creatures left to fend for themselves, confused and helpless.

Animal abandonment is not only a cruelty that no living being should endure, but it also poses serious ethical and environmental concerns. The abandoned animals often suffer from starvation, disease, and sometimes even death, unable to survive without human care. Furthermore, this has created an uncomfortable environment for the residents in the area, who are burdened with the responsibility and financial expense of caring for these animals, most of whom require immediate medical attention.

According to the ASPCA, approximately 6.5 million companion animals enter U.S. animal shelters nationwide every year, and many of these animals are the byproduct of such abandonment cases. We must step up and serve as their voiceless advocates, promoting humane treatment and discouraging the abandonment of pets.

It is imperative that we act swiftly to protect these vulnerable animals. I am calling on the local authorities in Bradford County to increase patrols in the area and install cameras to monitor and deter abandonment activities. We also urge the setting up of signs reminding the public of penalties for animal abandonment. Additionally, the implementation of an animal rescue and rehabilitation initiative, in collaboration with local shelters and volunteers, could provide a safe haven and necessary care for these animals.

Let us come together as a community to make a change. We can address this dire situation with compassion and commitment. Every signature on this petition is a step towards a region where animals are treated with respect and kindness.

Please sign this petition to make Old Lawtey Road a safe place for all creatures.
