Dear Petition Supporters,

Last weekend, Male Champions-led shopping centres hosted a variety of Easter-themed activities for children. The activities were conducted against a backdrop of Honey Birdette porn-themed shop windows.

Images captured during what should have been innocent, kid-friendly fun underscore yet again the need for an overhaul of our advertising regulatory system. We know that exposure to the type of overtly sexualised and objectifying imagery used in these ads causes harm. We also know that the self-regulatory styled system employed by Ad Standards does nothing to protect from the persistent and harmful activities of repeat offenders like Honey Birdette.

A compelling case in point was documented over Easter weekend in a Perth shopping centre. Despite a 20 March ruling by Ad Standards that found an ad to be in breach of AANA (advertising industry) Code of Ethics, the ad was on display for forced viewing by children participating in school holiday fun at Galleria Morley on Saturday, 20 April.

With the election looming, now is a great time to ask your election candidates if they will support a new system of advertising regulation. We need a system that prioritises the safety and well-being of children and protects them from harmful, sexually objectifying messages about women. Together, we can highlight this as an issue of importance to those in the running for our votes.

Kenneth
