Happy New Year to close to 60,000 of You with a conscience! I'm really glad that we can go into this new year knowing that the ASB has morals consistent with the majority of this petition's supporters. After all, the board of 20 people from diverse backgrounds is supposedly representative of Australians. But as far as I know, they have never ruled Honey Birdette ads to be Exploitive and Degrading (section 2.2) as well as breached the more common section 2.4. Many of us thought they did. So what has changed? Have the ads actually stepped pushed past a few more social barriers? Or have we, the people, been throwing back what should be regarded more as common sense? It's understandable that the NBC in America has issued strict guidelines for workplace behaviour after the fallout with Lauer. But is this the society we want to live in? A lot of people misunderstand this petition and think we are about banning the female body or "bringing in the burkha". Ultimately, this is about respecting each other especially women and children, and more rules has never been our goal. What the ASB, Westfield, Honey Birdette and indeed all of us needs is not simply guidelines and rules. We all need to promote a culture of HONOR rather than a culture of domination, exploitation and degradation (porn culture). A culture that respects members of the opposite sex rather than objectifies and abuses them. A culture that protects children in their formative years so that they will grow up healthily. With honour-culture in place, we don’t need to rely on repeated and incessant public complaints because it is so rare as to stand out on its own. And when it does raise its ugly head, people won’t need to be coaxed to complain about it. They will en masse do so as a matter of conscience.
