The Issue

It is with deep anger and heartbreak that we share this news.

The "1st Annual Coyote Classic," a coyote killing contest, has been announced months after Alberta's "Top Wolf Killing Contest."

Organized by Storm Mountain Outfitters out of Stettler, Alberta, the event promises cash prizes to those who return the most coyote pelts, all at the expense of innocent animals. Despite the controversial nature of this contest, it has received little media attention, and we wanted to ensure you were informed.  There is even a category for children to kill coyotes.  Exposing a growing brain to violence harms mental health, often making the young person prone to violence against humans.  We would suggest turning this hunting contest into an ethical photography contest.  https://www.facebook.com/100064442901881/posts/pfbid0by6BznECyyCQfKPTavTkBrEK9dBz6VqJQGFNed5CN6MVDx3a6avhQsYnQtLa8xmWl/?

Coyote hunting contests do not resolve any issues regarding negative encounters with humans, pets, or farm animals.  Hunting coyotes leaves room for more to breed and increases the numbers by breaking up family units.  A more effective approach is to eliminate attractants by securing food and compost, and by banning the feeding of wildlife.  A coyote non lethal coexistence program that is focused on education of humans and behaviour modification of coyotes who come into negative contact with humans or domestic animals is far more effective.  www.coyotewatchcanada.com
