STOP AI ART
The issue
Art is the way we humans express ourselves. Ever since the beginning of our species, we used cave carving to tell stories, express an emotion or make a statement about our lives.
Since then we have evolved from using sharpened stones and cave wall, to paint brushes and canvases. Artist such as Leonardo Davinci, Vincent van Gogh and Pablo Picasso used the canvas to create great pieces of art that are still displayed to this day. Art has evolved so far throughout the centuries when people used programs such as Photoshop and Procreate to make art, but there was always the sense that art always a person involved in creatingreated a piece of art.
But in 2023 we're seeing a rise in "AI Art" thanks to programs such at Stable Diffusioncreatingtable diffusion and Midjourney. These programs work on a deep learning text-to-speech model. Pretty much if you write a prompt such as "Homer Simpson eating ice cream" the Program will generate an image. The way it creates this image is by being fed hundreds of thousands of pre-existing photos as a reference to create a new image. The problem with this is that by doing this they're stealing the work of real artist without their permission.
Most of the people you see raving about AI art being "the future of art" are not actual artist. They're Crypto investors, Techbros and get rich quick influencers.
Filmmaker Guillermo Del Toro was asked about AI Art and said, "It can interpolate information, but it cannot draw. It can never capture a feeling, or a countenance, or the softness of a human face, you know?"
By joing this petition you are letting Gallerist know that the AI art shouldnt be displayed alongside the work of real artists. Your letting CEOs of film companies such as David Zaslav and Bob Iger that AI will never be able to create films the same way filmmakers do, and most importantly your championing the real hard work of humans over the "work" of a computer.
