I'm sure many of you have seen the White House's response to our petition. In short, the President doesn't have the legal authority to pardon Steven Avery or Brendan Dassey. Although this is disappointing, the fact that we got a response from the highest office in the U.S. is incredible. Steven Avery's future now depends on the discovery of new compelling evidence, or a pardon from Wisconsin Governor Scott Walker, who has said that he won't be issuing any pardons while he is governor (twitter: @GovWalker). Brendan Dassey currently has a writ of habeas corpus pending with Magistrate Judge William E. Duffin. This means that Judge Duffin can exonerate Brenden, or grant him a new trial (or neither).
