The Issue

Dear Members of the South Brunswick School Board,

We, the undersigned parents, guardians, and concerned community members, hereby submit this urgent petition to express our deep concern and disappointment regarding the recent decision to terminate school bus services for approximately 250 families in our South Brunswick school district.

We request the board to reconsider this one side decision, as it disregards the needs of our children and severely impacts their educational experiences. This sudden and unilateral action has left numerous families in distress, struggling to find safe and reliable transportation options for their children.

We are aware that the school district operates on a substantial budget of $160 million, and it is disheartening to see that a mere $400,000 cannot be allocated to retain these essential services. School buses are not merely vehicles; they represent an integral part of our children's education by fostering a sense of community, promoting social interactions, and ensuring a stress-free journey to school.

Moreover, there are multiple visible opportunities in front of the board to optimize the budget from revenue lift to reducing people and non-people spend but they choose to deny basic transportation to our children, causing them hardship, and compromising their learning experiences.

We, the undersigned, hereby request the following:

  1. Immediately halt the discontinuation of school bus services.
  2. Reallocate $400,000 from the existing budget to reinstate the school bus services, ensuring equal access to education for all students.
  3. Review and reconsider non essential expenses approved in the budget, ensuring that the board's financial priorities align with the best interests of the students.
  4. Engage in open communication with the concerned families, considering their input and grievances, and work collaboratively to find a viable solution.

As parents and members of this community, we believe that our children's education, well-being and safety should be the topmost priority of the board. Denying them access to school bus services without offering any alternatives is unjust.

We sincerely hope that the South Brunswick School Board will recognize the urgency and significance of this matter and take immediate action to rectify the situation.
