Start School Later Advocates Testify in Support of Healthy School Hours

I testified yesterday in Austin with SSL chapter leaders from Houston and Austin in support of HB 1602 requiring public schools to start instruction at 8 a.m. or later.  A policy fellow for National Alliance of Mental Illness-Texas and a student from Santa Fe High School, whose first bell is 6:55 am, also testified.

We had numerous students and organizations issued cards of support including the Texas Pediatric Society, the Center of Public Policy Priorities, the Association of Texas Professional Educators, and the League of Women Voters-Texas.

Letters of support were submitted by several pediatric sleep specialists, the Deer Park ISD assistant superintendent, and the SSL Executive Director.
