The Issue

FAO Cllr Charles Edwards, the Cabinet Member for Highways and Transport at Lancashire County Council

Areas across the UK are starting to provide 'bee bus stops', or bus stops whose roofs have been turned into wildlife gardens providing a vital habitat for bees and butterflies.

97% of the UK's wildflower meadows have been lost since the end of the Second World War, and the 2019 State of Nature report found that of 529 assessed urban wildlife species, 37 are considered at risk of extinction.

The Dutch city of Utrecht, which pioneered the scheme and now has more than 300 bus stops, has seen urban bee populations stabilise in recent years.

The number of these bus stops are set to increase by 50% by the end of 2022, and Clear Channel UK, the company which manages many bus stops across the country, are encouraging local authorities to adopt them.

We therefore urge Lancashire County Council to start replacing decaying bus stops with bee bus stops to help provide a vital habitat for urban wildlife.
