Start my middle school later and grant us more freedom
The Issue
Every school day, I'm faced with a struggle that's affecting not only me but many of my peers. My middle school starts at 7:10 AM, and we're given only 10 minutes to get breakfast and enter the building. This tight schedule means I often find myself rushing and shoving down my breakfast just to have time to eat. This rushed start to the day doesn't just affect our morning routine; it has repercussions throughout the entire school day.
Numerous studies have shown that early school start times can negatively impact the health, well-being, and academic performance of students. According to significant research by the American Academy of Pediatrics, starting school at 8:30 AM or later aligns better with adolescent sleep needs and leads to improved alertness, mood, and academic performance.
Moreover, the stress and overworking are palpable among my classmates. By the end of the day, many of us suffer from headaches and fatigue, symptoms directly linked to early start times and the demanding pace of the school day. We are advocating for a later start time that allows us to begin our day with sufficient rest and mental preparation.
In addition to starting later, we are pleading for more freedom in our daily schedule. This could include longer breaks throughout the day, allowing us the necessary time to unwind and rejuvenate our minds, as well as opportunities for self-directed learning and extracurricular involvement that foster personal growth.
My peers and I believe that by implementing these changes, our school will not only see happier students but also notice a marked improvement in our academic successes and overall well-being. These changes are both beneficial and necessary, and I'm asking for your support to make this happen.
Please sign this petition to help our middle school start later and give students the freedom necessary to succeed and thrive.
