Start an explorers program for fire and EMS in Spokane
The Issue
Growing up in Spokane, Washington, I’ve always dreamed of becoming a firefighter. At 15, I’m determined and passionate about this noble profession that does so much for our communities in need. But I’ve noticed a big gap: there’s no clear path for teens like me to start this career until after high school.
I’ve talked to many classmates and people around town, and they all agree—there’s not enough exposure or chances for teenagers to get involved with firefighting and EMS before they become adults. This lack of opportunities is worrying not just for people like me who want to serve the public, but also for our community, which depends on these vital services.
The National Association of Emergency Medical Technicians says the EMS field is short-staffed, with a 10% vacancy rate in many agencies. This makes it hard to respond to emergencies effectively. Plus, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics predicts that the need for firefighters and emergency medical technicians will grow by 6% from 2020 to 2030, showing a clear need for new workers in these areas.
To tackle these problems, I suggest starting an Explorers Program for Fire and EMS in Spokane. This program would be a place for young talent to get first-hand experience with the challenges and rewards of emergency services. It would open doors for young adventurers eager to learn, meeting our community’s need for skilled and dedicated professionals.
The Explorers Program could offer a clear path for aspiring young firefighters and EMS workers. By pairing them with experienced mentors, the program can provide valuable insights into daily tasks, essential skills, and career growth. Through workshops, training simulations, and community service projects, we can inspire more teens to consider and pursue a future in these crucial services.
It’s important that we support our youth by giving them the knowledge and experiences they need. This program would not only benefit those directly involved but also strengthen Spokane’s emergency medical services overall. Let’s nurture our future heroes and improve our community’s safety net.
