Standardise Name Formats in India’s Official Records to End Initial-Based Errors

The Issue

I am Rajtharan G. My Aadhaar records my name with an initial, but the same format is rejected by PAN and other official systems. This forces repeated corrections, rejections, and uncertainty over how my name should be expanded across records.

This is not an isolated issue. Across India, lakhs of citizens with initial-based names face similar problems in PAN, passports, banking, taxation, and employment verification. Different departments follow different rules, leaving citizens to guess how their own names should be recorded.

The root problem is the absence of a clear, uniform national standard for handling initials in official records. This directly undermines digital governance and creates avoidable administrative burden.

I urge the Government of India to mandate expanded full names for official records, issue clear guidelines for first, middle, and last names, and allow expansion of initials as a standardisation process rather than a name change. This will ensure consistency, reduce errors, and protect citizens from lifelong documentation issues.
