Stand With Small Businesses: Call on Westdell to End Its Legal Action
The Issue
A small business has closed. A family's livelihood has been devastated. Now, we're asking for an opportunity to move forward.
The Little's Lucan Inc. was founded with a simple dream: to create a place where children could play, families could connect, and a small Ontario community could grow together.
In April 2026, that dream came to an end following a commercial tenancy dispute with Westdell Development Corporation.
But the closure of the business was not the end of the financial and emotional consequences for the family behind it.
Westdell is pursuing legal action against The Little's Lucan Inc. and the business owner's husband, who personally guaranteed the commercial lease.
While personal guarantees create legal obligations, we believe there is room for compassion, proportionality, and negotiated resolution when a small business has already closed.
We have also heard from other business owners who have expressed concerns about their own experiences with commercial leasing through Westdell. We believe these experiences deserve to be heard, documented, and considered fairly.
We are calling on Westdell Development Corporation to discontinue its lawsuit against The Little's Lucan Inc. and its personal guarantor, and to resolve the dispute.
We are not asking anyone to ignore legitimate contractual rights. We are asking whether continued litigation is the most constructive outcome for a business that no longer operates and a family already facing significant financial consequences. We are asking the public to consider what is fair! We've spent over a year dealing with Westdell and we've never missed a rent payment.
This petition is about more than one business. It is about the relationship between commercial landlords and the small businesses that invest in their properties, contribute to local economies, and take enormous personal financial risks to bring their dreams to life.
Forcing a business to close should not mean losing the opportunity to rebuild a life.
