Stand Up for MCPS Students and Families: Reject These Harmful Cuts
The Issue
WE ARE NOT ASKING FOR DONATIONS. The recent proposal by the Montgomery County Public Schools Superintendent to enact significant cuts in our educational system is threatening to dismantle crucial support staff positions that serve our most vulnerable students and families. The plan includes the elimination of much of the EML Therapeutic Counseling team, Pupil Personnel Workers (PPWs), Family Engagement Specialists (FES), Social Workers, and several other essential roles. This move, set to go into effect shortly, would undermine the essential network of support that countless students rely on each day.
The impact of these cuts would be disastrous, particularly for students who depend on these resources to thrive both academically and emotionally. The presence of EML Counselors, PPWs, social workers, and engagement staff in schools isn't just an added benefit, it's a necessity. These professionals work tirelessly to ensure students' well-being, bridge communication between families and schools, and address a myriad of challenges that could otherwise hinder a student’s educational journey.
Furthermore, the removal of these positions will not only affect hundreds of dedicated professionals and their families but will also disrupt the educational experience for thousands of students. Historically, during budget cuts, facing staff and those focused on family engagement are the first to be reduced. Such measures isolate families and students who are already marginalized, exacerbating inequities within our educational system.
We urge the decision-makers to reconsider this proposal and recognize the invaluable support these professionals provide. Instead of creating barriers, we should be investing in more inclusive and comprehensive educational support networks. Our students deserve the best possible environment to learn and grow, and that includes having the necessary emotional and social support.
Join us in speaking out against these cuts. Let your voice be heard for the sake of our students' futures. Please sign this petition to protect the essential roles of our school support staff and ensure every student has access to the support they need to succeed.
