STACY’S LAW — ANOTHER IMPORTANT STEP FORWARD
There has been another important development for what we have been fighting for with Stacy’s Law.
The Scottish Parliament has now formally welcomed the commitment to pilot GPS monitoring for suspected domestic abusers released on bail — and, importantly, has called on the Scottish Government to urgently set out a timetable for its implementation AND wider rollout.
This matters.
It is no longer just individual MSPs asking when this will happen. The call for an urgent timetable and wider rollout is now formally recorded in the Scottish Parliament’s amended motion.
When I started the Stacy’s Law petition following Stacy Hunter’s death, one of the central questions was simple:
Why are we still asking the person at risk to keep themselves safe from someone the justice system already knows may pose a risk?
We called for GPS monitoring, exclusion zones and effective breach detection in high-risk domestic abuse cases.
Now GPS monitoring for suspected domestic abusers on bail is moving towards a pilot, and Parliament itself is calling for the Government to tell us when it will happen and when it will go further.
That is real progress.
But we are not finished.
We still need answers about:
• When exactly will the pilot begin?
• When will GPS monitoring be rolled out across Scotland?
• How will exclusion zones work?
• Will police receive real-time breach alerts?
• Will the person at risk be alerted?
• What will the rapid response to a breach look like?
And importantly, protection must not depend on where someone lives.
Stacy should be alive.
We cannot change what happened to Stacy, but we can keep pushing for changes that could help protect someone else.
