Reinstate Dr Neal Hovelmeier.

The Issue

On the 21. September 2018 Dr. Neal Hovelmeier was forced to reveal his sexuality to the school where he was deputy headmaster and has since been ridiculed and tormented by the parents/stakeholders of the school. St John's College is the finest school in the country and Dr. Neal Hovelmeier has dedicated the last 15 years of his life to the school and has helped make it what it is today.

St Johns College is an all-boys school in Zimbabwe's capital, Harare and is renowned not only for the academic achievements of their students past and present but also for their achievements at sporting and other co-curricular events. An example of this is their winning the Novice/Junior World Pipe Band Challenge in Scotland this year under the direction of Dr. Hovelmeier.

Unfortunately, Dr. Hovelmeier has received death threats since his coming-out and was forced to resign as some of the parents/stakeholders threatened to take legal action against the school.

Being a homosexual in Zimbabwe is, disappointingly, still against the law. However, if we get enough signatures, we could not only get Dr. Hovelmeier reinstated as deputy headmaster but we also could get the attention of the Zimbabwean government.

Other people that have been living in fear of revealing their sexual orientation would be able to live a normal and peaceful life without the threat of criminal charges or worse. Zimbabwe would also take a step forward and set an example for the other African nations that we ARE a tolerant and progressive society, no matter ones creed, colour, or sexual orientation.

St. John's College is a world-class institution dedicated to teaching their pupils how to be world class citizens, yet how can a school teach their children to be world class when they can't even tolerate a man's sexual orientation?
