Do not raise St. John's University tuition for the 2020-2021 academic year
The Issue
It was brought to several students’ attention on June 1, 2020, that tuition for St. John’s University graduate, undergraduate, and law programs will increase for the 2020-2021 academic year. Accompanying this increase in annual tuition, room and board fees are also set to increase for resident students during the 2020-2021 academic year. University tuition should not increase as conditions for next semester continue to be uncertain.
The base tuition rate for undergraduate students will increase by at least $1,260 annually (depending on students’ colleges), and law school tuition will increase by $2,140 annually for full-time students. Additionally, room and board fees (dorm rooms, meal plans, and additional fees) are also set to increase by about $300 per semester. Overall, these tuition changes will result in a more than $1,000 price increase for all students during the 2020-2021 academic year that many students may be unable to accommodate given the current circumstances.
St. John’s University students are calling for the annual university tuition NOT to increase. During the COVID-19 pandemic, many students are facing unprecedented financial hardships. Many students and their families have lost their jobs in recent months and are still unsure of when they will be able to return to work. We are still at a point in time when no one knows for certain whether or not in-person learning will resume in September. The price of university tuition should reflect the quality of the education students are receiving. Many studies show that online learning as not as beneficial or educational as in-person learning, and many professors are unable to operate on a remote/online platform. Additionally, several students have noticed that in-person classes they registered for several months ago have been switched to online without any form of notification.
For the reasons listed above, St. John’s University students are also asking for the due date for Fall 2020 tuition payments to be pushed back further past July 22, 2020. At this time, we likely still will not know for certain if in-person classes will resume. Students who have endured financial difficulty during the COVID-19 pandemic may also have difficulty meeting this deadline, as some things are simply more important and essential than tuition payments.
